A Roadmap for Research & Innovation

In 2022 FinTech Scotland published an industry-led fintech Research and Innovation Roadmap designed to accelerate financial technology innovation across Scotland and the UK. It aims to drive collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers in order to driving positive economic, societal, and environmental outcomes.

Financial Regulation

The Financial Regulation section of the FinTech Scotland Research and Innovation Roadmap highlights the transformative potential of innovation in compliance, risk management, and regulatory design. By leveraging advanced technologies such as AI, the roadmap envisions a future where regulatory processes are streamlined and more efficient, fostering innovation while maintaining robust safeguards. Central to this vision is the Financial Regulation Innovation Lab, a collaborative initiative bringing together regulators, fintechs, and academic experts. The lab aims to pioneer new approaches to real-time risk.

Payment and Transactions

Under Payments and Transactions, the Research and Innovation Roadmap explores the evolution of financial exchanges in a rapidly digitalising world with a focus on digital currencies, embedded payments, and enhanced security for digital transactions. The roadmap mentions the need to drive innovation that simplifies and secures payment systems for both consumers and businesses.

Climate Finance

The Roadmap also focusses on Climate Finance Innovation and the critical role of financial innovation can play in driving the transition to a net-zero economy. The report addresses priorities such as ESG data, carbon markets, and sustainable investment, this priority theme harnesses fintech solutions to tackle environmental challenges and enable greener financial practices.

Open Finance Innovation

The Open Finance Data section of the Fintech Scotland Research and Innovation Roadmap recognises the transformative opportunity made possible by secured data sharing to create personalised, accessible, and innovative financial services. It is about unlocking the potential of Open Finance to improve everyday banking, long-term savings, and insurance through enhanced data insights and consumer-centric solutions.
